So a few months ago I found this powerful speech from Severn Suzuki on Youtube dating back from 1992. Severn was only 12 and yet her speech deeply touched me. I consider this speech to be amongst the most powerful speech ever made, an environmental revolution comparable to the “I had a dream” from Dr. Martin Luther King jr. Mr Elle and I had composed this music track for the new album, but could not figure out how we would bring it to maturity. In one afternoon I started working with my team, we got in touch with Severn Suzuki with the help of Celine Cousteau the grand daughter of Jacques. And things just fell into places. Synchronicity one could say!

Severn was amazing. Although in the middle of having a baby she managed to send a quick note to us saying she was honored to have me mix a track for the speech. I thought I was supposed to be the one honored to score such a beautiful speech.

I transformed her speech a tad by cutting into it and mixing it with the music.What she said back in 1992 is even more relevant today as time is of the essence on our troubled planet. The “It’s not the end of the world” is a call to all of us to believe in our future and the power we have to change things for the  better. I am not an environmental leader, just a music producer and artist but I believe in a better future. Part of the proceeds for this track will be donated to the David Suzuki  Foundation (Severn’s Father). He is a fabulous environmental leader and very inspiring one (some of you might have seen him in the 11th hour directed by Leonardo di Caprio).

Each album is a new adventure. I always pick a theme and create each track to echo the theme in a different way. For example on Wash My World, I thought that the problem we have with destroying the planet is directly linked with the stress we generate on a daily basis. In other words, if we could figure out a way to let go of the ambient stress we could take the time to think more about our planet and solve problems in regard to the environment. Explosion, I Pray were also following the same message the same story line. Of course some tracks are more for fun, I voluntarily add them to the album to make people move, to make people happy.

On Albums, I work in stages. I write several melodies and tracks with Mr. Elle. Once we have every track we listen to them over and over and over again to figure out what would the melody of the lyrics be, then we imagine different types of voices on the track. This is by far the most challenging part. Once we have the voice in mind we start hunting. I like special voices with different tonalities. For example part of the reason behind the success of No Stress is that the message is strong, the melody is engaging and Eric Carter’s voice is just perfect for this track. In the same way, I can’t imagine another voice on 70’s other than Mod Martin…perhaps Bono from U2?

Now back to the new album, I probably have heard 100’s of voices since we started the new album, we even recorded tracks thinking they would be final, and for some reasons it ended up not working. Some could think the creative process is frustrating, I see it as a challenge to be even more creative. I read not too long ago that the famous hollywood film maker Tim Burton (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,Batman Return,Sweeney Todd etc) ends up working each year on one movie that will never see the light of the projector. Some call them failed project. I see it as the perfect occasion to foster new ideas for projects, in my case songs or albums that eventually will make it on a CD.

So I know some of you are impatient to see the new album, and the release date has moved around some, but know that my team and I are doing our absolute best to produce the best sound out there.

What really is all the fuss about the Top 100 DJs event by the well respected, London based, Dj Mag? I personally dig it, I think it is great that everyone a.k.a : you the grand general public, the heart and soul of our electro,house,dance tribe get to vote for the top 100 DJs of the year. The actors have the Oscars, the musicians get the Grammys, what about the one that get you tearing down the dancefloors?

I have been experimenting a lot with new sounds lately. Once a journalist asked me “So how do you come up with a track?”  well…I don’t really come up with a track, it is more of a collaborative process. There is a lot of tweaking on pro tools in my home studio and back and forth in between the voice talents that I work with and my  studio crew. But really it all starts when I am mixing live, I usually add a few new tracks that I have been mixing in studio and watch for the reaction on the dancefloor. I remember when I first played “Saxo” live at the Queen in Paris , everyone in the room felt it including me. What an amazing feeling. The sound just felt right and the dancefloor went out of control. It is almost like a collective adrenaline rush that everyone feels at the same time.

There is a lot of evolution in my music, I have a lot of influences from jazz, jazz vocal and from the music I listen to when I am away from the studio. I listen to a lot of R’n'B lately. Definitely influencing my sound. As for the lyrics and themes/story lines it really comes from interaction and conversation with people and my own experiences.

So the future of the sound I produce? Well, there are so many factors but at the end of the day none of the creative process would be  possible without you the audience.
